Right then, you know how I’ve talked about Firefox OS (the new platform that’s currently appearing in developing markets, and will pop upon Sony phone in the fullness of time) a few times, and how I’ve usually been less than kind when talking about it? Well yesterday, I finally got the Firefox OS Simulator working on my PC, so I’ve finally had a chance to play around with it; let’s not beat about the bush here, I’ve only gone and done a proper big U-turn on the topic of Firefox OS.
Back in March, I did a post about the new platform, y’see, and my opinion at the time was that it seemed like Firefox OS was a wash. I am now very, very pleased to say that I was absolutely, categorically, 100% wrong…
The mistake I made (and it’s a proper noob mistake, as well, I should be ashamed of myself) was to judge the standard of the platform on very early alpha builds. At the time, those builds were really laggy, kinda slow, and not very nice to use, as far as I could see. They were, in other words, very obvious alpha builds. Yesterday, though, I played with what appears to be the proper build of Firefox OS, and my new opinion is this:
Ye gods, it’s nice!
In the space of but one day, I have become a convert. The interface, although being a bit plain, is unbelievably fast and responsive, and although it should be because I’m trying it out on a relatively high-spec PC, low-end phones offer pretty much the same performance. Seriously, if the goal of Firefox OS is to match the performance of mid-range Android phones like the Sony Xperia L or even the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini, but on low-end budget hardware with cheaper processors, then they’ve hit the ball right out of the park. I’m genuinely stunned by that fact.
But best of all, there’s the price; they say that Firefox phones are selling in those developing markets for the equivalent of about 30-40 quid! That’s way below even the very cheapest Android phones, and the performance is light years ahead, hitting mid-range territory.
I’m stunned. I’m really, genuinely stunned.
I tell ye what, I can’t wait for Firefox phones to start landing in Blighty, ‘cos this is going to be epic!
